n Sunday night (September 17) a magnitude 4.2 earthquake was felt across sections of Jamaica.
The earthquake, which occurred shortly before midnight, was felt in St. Elizabeth, St. James, Hanover and St. Andrew.
According to the Earthquake Unit, the the epicentre was 40 kilometres southwest of Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth.
The quake had a focal depth of 15 kilometres.
In seismology, the depth of focus or focal depth refers to the depth at which an earthquake occurs. Earthquakes occurring at a depth of less than 70 km (43 mi) are classified as shallow-focus earthquakes, while those with a focal depth between 70 km (43 mi) and 300 km (190 mi) are commonly termed mid-focus or intermediate-depth earthquakes.
Shallow-focus earthquakes are of smaller magnitudes (1 to 5) while deep focus quakes are between 6 to 8 or greater.
